Vilnius City University Hospital was established in 1958 and is the oldest hospital of Vilnius city, built after the war. During this period, the hospital has educated a lot of doctors who have become a new base for the history of Lithuanian medicine. The names of VCUH doctors are honourably mentioned as teachers, scientists, and most importantly the mission doers, which is the most essential on earth – to protect and save the most precious human asset-life.

During the 50 years of hospital existence, 1 000 000 patients have been treated; over 400 000 surgeries have been performed, 112 300 newborns have born at Vilnius City University Hospital.

Presently, the hospital is the largest medical institution of Vilnius City Municipality, one of the main educational bases of the Medicine Faculty at Vilnius University.

The hospital is composed of 5 clinics: obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, vascular surgery, internal diseases and childhood diseases. Under license, the hospital implements stationary and ambulatory activity according to the profiles of diseases treatment, which is specialized or highly specialized:

Adults- common therapy, internal diseases, cardiology, nephrology, haemodialysis, resuscitation and intensive therapy, abdominal surgery, proctology, coloproctology, common surgery, angiosurgery, vascular surgery, urology, obstetrics, gynecology, pregnancy pathology;

Children- Children diseases, pediatrics systematic diseases, children resuscitation and intensive therapy, neonatology, newborns pathology, newborns resuscitation and intensive therapy;

ambulant health care – internal diseases, nephrology, general surgery, abdominal surgery, angiosurgery, vascular  surgery, urology, obstetrics gynaecology, children diseases, children pulmonology,  X ray diagnostics, radiology, endoscopy, echoscopy, interventional radiology, hyperbaric oxygenation, physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Every year more than 25 600 patients are treated, more than 30 500 are consulted, over 13 000 surgeries are implemented, up to 3400 childbirths are taken.

In order to examine and treat patients the following modern methods of diagnostics and treatment are applied: cardio stimulation, cardio version, cardiac catheterization, thrombolysis, coronarography, ultrasonic, endoscopic, radiodiagnostic and interventional radiology, computed tomographic analysis, during the echoscopy the biopsy, nephrostome, choleatetoma analysis of various organs are implemented, for those who have renal calculus the lithotriptors of the latest model of extracorporeal shock wave are used.

The laparoscopic surgeries became the daily round. The treatment method of hyperbaric oxygenation is widely applied.

For the diagnosis of vascular pathology the modern double scan ultrasonic apparatus with the coloured doppler is used, the reconstruction surgeries of abdominal and torakoabdominal aorta and its aneurysm of visceral branches are implemented as well as the angioplastic of visceral renal, carotid, practical and other, even the small foot arteries.

The analysis of liver, intestine ferments, also immune, DNA, hormone, bacteriological analysis and the analysis of motor functions of the digestive tract are implemented.

The laboratory is equipped with new, modern, computerized apparatus.

Children who have different respiratory, digestive, cardio and vascular diseases, portal hypertension, diabetes, children with different poisonings, cystic fibrosis are examined and treated at hospital, the programme of international cystic fibrosis is implemented.

An obstetrics and gynecology clinic has a Perinatology center, pregnant women, newborns, women who have medium or high risks of pregnancy and giving birth are consulted and treated.

While giving birth, a husband or relatives are allowed to take part in it, after giving birth, mother is allowed to be with a newborn.

Patients who have burnt or have been frostbitten, also proctologic patients are treated at hospital.

Over 30 thousand ambulant patients are consulted at hospital reception every year.
